A Sense of Perspective .....
Here's a series of pictures that my friend and colleague Nick Jarrett-Kerr emailed around Edge International recently, with the admonition:
"For any who are in danger of being tempted to think how great we are, take a few seconds to check this out and be humble!!!"
The size of the Earth, relative to our closest neighbours in the solar system:
OK - obviously not enough to extinguish any residual feelings of megalomania, so let's compare ourselves to the giant planets Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune:
Still unimpressed? OK, let's see how we stack up against our sun:
Yes, that hardly-visible speck is our earth, but wait ... how does our sun stack up against other stars? Let's start with Sirius (the brightest star in the night-time sky,) Pollux and Arcturus:
And then finally, how Arcturus compares to Rigel (the brightest star in constellation Orion,) Aldebaran and red giants Betelgeuse and Antares:
It's important for strategists to be able to maintain a sense of perspective. But this kind of "perspective" puts a whole new meaning to the word, doesn't it?
Comments, as always, are most welcome and may be posted below.
the world of the internal, the spiritual part of man, dwarfs anything found in the universe, the world of matter.
OMG!!
