Starling David Hunter III, who blogs at The Business of America is Business has a post on Measuring Globalization which would be of interest to strategists in multi-national / global professional service firms.

Hunter quotes recent research by global consulting firm A.T. Kearney, which underpins their 2005 Globalization Index that they publish together with Foreign Policy Magazine.

Quoting from A.T. Kearney's web site:

"The 62 countries ranked in the 2005 Globalization Index account for 96 percent of the world's gross domestic product (GDP) and 85 percent of the world's population. Major regions of the world, including developed and developing countries, are covered to provide a comprehensive and comparative view of global integration.

Economic integration combines data on trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) inflows and outflows. Personal contact tracks international travel and tourism, international telephone traffic, and cross-border remittances and personal transfers (including worker remittances, compensation to employees, and other person-to-person and nongovernmental transfers). Technological connectivity counts the number of Internet users, Internet hosts, and secure servers through which encrypted transactions are carried out. Finally, political engagement includes each country's memberships in a variety of representative international organizations, personnel and financial contributions to UN peacekeeping missions, ratification of selected multilateral treaties, and amounts of governmental transfer payments and receipts."
